Real Madrid are monitoring the ongoing contract negotiations between Glen Johnson and Liverpool, and could make a move for the right-back this summer.
The 29-year-old is currently in the penultimate year of his contract, which expires in 2015, and due to Liverpool’s apparent reluctance to offer lucrative, long-term contracts to players older than 30, Carlo Ancelotti may swoop and bring the former Portsmouth player to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ex-Liverpool player Alvaro Arbeloa is currently deemed surplus to requirements in Madrid, and the 4.00 Champions League second favourites see Johnson as the perfect player to compete with Daniel Carvajal for their right-back berth.
Speaking earlier this season, Johnson stated: “I’ve loved every minute of the five years I’ve been here and I’d love to stay but really the only truth in it is that I’ve not been offered a new contract on any level.
“No-one has come to me from Liverpool at all. I don’t know the situation the club are in or if they want to renew it. So I’ve not got a decision to make other than to see my contract out because no-one is telling me any different.”
If contract discussions continue to stall between the two parties, Madrid could very well make a move for Johnson and test the water with a bid in the summer.
Johnson is likely to be involved for England in the World Cup in Brazil which may alert other clubs if he impresses, although there is not much that the football world will not already know about the 29-year-old following his spells with West Ham, Chelsea, Portsmouth and now Liverpool.
