Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised after being sent off in his side’s 2-1 win at Cordoba on Saturday.

Los Blancos struggled to break down the La Liga strugglers and trailed early on following a Nabil Ghilas penalty.

Real did equalise in the first half through Karim Benzema but the scores were still level at 1-1 when Ronaldo was dismissed.

The Ballon d’Or winner, who is 4.00 to be the UEFA Champions League top goalscorer, was given his marching orders for kicking out at Edimar inside the final 10 minutes.

“I apologise to all and especially to Edimar for my reckless act in the game today,” he wrote on Twitter afterwards.

Real did manage to claim all three points as Gareth Bale converted a late penalty, after Cordoba’s Federico Cartabia had been sent off for a foul inside the box.

Ronaldo could be handed a three game ban for his red card and he would miss the Madrid derby with Atletico on February 7 if that is the case, as well as home games against Real Sociedad and Sevilla.

The result means Real remain a point clear of second-placed Barcelona in La Liga and four ahead of defending champions Atleti, having played a game less than their two title rivals.
