After 17 matches are played in the English Premier League 2020/2021 season, Sheffield United finally got their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over 10-man Newcastle United on Tuesday at the Bramall Lane.

Before the game, Sheffield United had gone 17 games winless, 15 losses and 2 draws are the statistics that made up the start the team had to the season. The team had only scored 8 goals and conceded 29 in 17 Premier League games.

Newcastle were reduced to ten men when Ryan Fraser was sent off before the end of the first half having been booked twice for fouls on John Fleck and David McGoldrick.

The Blades scored the match-winner with 15 minutes remaining as Billy Sharp put a penalty past Karl Darlow in the Toons goal after Federico Fernandez handled the ball.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder explained that he was delighted with the performance of his players for their first win of the season.

“The penalty will be talked about but in my opinion we were value for the victory. Everybody needs a bit of luck. But it wasn’t an outrageous stroke of fortune. The performance was good, considering the position we are in. We’ve had a load of tight games and we’ll take it. I was looking for my car keys and to take up another sport if we’d thrown it away in added time.” Wilder said.

Sheffield United will face Tottenham in the league on Sunday, 17 January while Newcastle play their third away game in a row on Monday, 18 January at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal.

In other matches on Tuesday evening Manchester United defeated Burnley 0-1, while Everton overcame Wolves with a 2-1 win.
