Juan Mata said he was delighted to extend his time at Manchester United, signing a new deal to keep him at the club until June 2021.

The midfielder’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of the month and United were keen to keep him at the club with Ander Herrera set to leave and Antonio Valencia coming to the end of his time at Old Trafford.

Mata told the club’s official website: “It is a real honour to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans. I have been at Manchester United for five years and I am proud to call Old Trafford my home.

“I am looking forward to working with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his fantastic coaching staff; the vision that they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that.”

Solskjaer said that Mata’s experience would be invaluable in helping the younger players at the club reach their potential. Mata joined United from Chelsea in 2014 and so far has scored 45 goals in 218 appearances.

He made 22 Premier League appearances last season in what was a disappointing campaign for United who finished sixth in the table, forcing them into the Europa League in 2019-20.

United are on their travels in pre-season, taking in Australia, China and Singapore. Their games are against Perth Glory, Leeds United, both Inter and AC Milan and Tottenham.

United start the new Premier League season at home to Chelsea on August 11.

Having failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League, United are 1.91 to achieve that for 2020-21 by securing a top-four finish in the Premier League with Arsenal 2.15 and Everton 19.00.
