It has not been easy going for Anthony Martial at Old Trafford since the last season. The Frenchman scored only seven goals from 36 appearances last season and there were speculations regarding his future at the club. However Martial has already opened his account for this season against Everton.

However former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke wants Martial to ‘buckle down’ if he wants to stay at Old Trafford. Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, the pressure on Martial has increased. The Frenchman struggled with persistent injuries last season which hindered his performances for the Red Devils.

Yorke believes that Martial needs a good run of games for United. However, he wants the former AS Monaco star to keep improving if he wants a long term future at the club.

“When you play for this club and you’re not doing the business and your form dips for whatever reason you’re going to be under scrutiny. He’s got to buckle down really if he has a future at this football club,” Yorke told Goal.com.

“He’s undoubtedly got immense talent and all the attributes we like to see in an attacking player and there’s no question he can be that vital player for us but at the moment he’s not in the squad and he’s got to find a way to get back into the team.”

Martial joined Manchester United back in 2015 from French outfit AS Monaco. When he came to Old Trafford he was one of the next big things in world football. However the French international has failed to live up to those lofty expectations. His best season for Manchester United till now has been in 2019-20 when he scored 23 goals. That is the only time he has managed to score 20 plus goals in six years at the club, rightfully getting criticised for his performances.

While Yorke suggested that Martial should be playing more matches, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has made life more difficult for the 25-year-old. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started Ronaldo on the bench and received a lot of criticism as United shared the spoils against Everton in a 1-1 draw. Therefore the Norwegian tactician will be reluctant to bench Ronaldo again which will make things more complicated for Martial.
