Manchester City have confirmed striker Sergio Aguero was involved in a car crash on Thursday and they are awaiting news on his injuries.

Various reports have claimed the 29-year-old fractured a rib after the taxi in which he was travelling in Amsterdam struck a pillar.

City have clarified Aguero was involved in an incident and they are expecting him back in England on Friday afternoon for further tests to assess him.

A club statement read: “Sergio Aguero will be assessed by club doctors today [Friday] after being involved in a road accident on Thursday.

“The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries.

“He will return to Manchester this morning and his status will be checked ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Chelsea.”

Reports in Argentina claim Aguero could be set to miss as much as three months of football.

In-form Aguero has made a strong start to the current season, netting seven goals in all competitions, including a hat-trick at Watford earlier this month.

After a troubled season at times last year, the forward also appears to have cemented his position once again as number one striker under Pep Guardiola.

Aguero needs just one more goal to equal Manchester City’s all-time scoring record.

Guardiola now looks certain to be planning with Aguero for the weekend trip to face Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

City are 2.80 to win that game, with Chelsea 2.60 and the draw 3.40.
