Newcastle have shown their determination to push for the top four in the Premier League by rejecting a bid from Paris Saint Germain for star midfield Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye has spoken of his desire to play Champions League football and the fact he is not cup tied in this season’s competition, makes him a very attractive proposition to the PSG and Arsenal, who have also been heavily linked.

However Toon boss Alan Pardew is trying to convince the Frenchman that he will be able to play Champions League football at St James’ Park and will fight keep hold of the midfielder, at least until the end of the season.

That may be easier said than done though as a huge offer could tempt Magpies owner Mike Ashley to cash in on Cabaye, just like he did when Liverpool bid £31million for then Toon striker Andy Carroll.

Newcastle sit in eighth place in the Premier League after recovering from a slow start to the season that had them looking over their shoulder at the relegation places rather than the top four.

They are now just seven points behind Liverpool who occupy the fourth and final Champions League place, and holding on to Cabaye will be crucial to their chances of bridging the gap.

Newcastle are next in action on Tuesday when they travel to struggling Norwich City and 2.39 favourites to pick up another three points, with Norwich 2.87 for a home win, while the draw is 3.30.
