The much sought after Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has been linked with a move to Spartak Moscow.

The 24-year-old Belgian has been mentioned as a target for a number of Premier League clubs, including Norwich, Everton, Liverpool and Spurs, but all four could see their ambitions scuppered if a bid from Spartak is accepted by the Dutch side.

Alderweireld rejected a move to the Canaries earlier in the summer after failing to agree personal terms, but Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars said he is confident of securing a new deal.

“We have received an offer. We won’t give any names as we are still in talks. But, just like with Norwich City earlier, I expect we can work out a deal with this club,” he said.

The figure being talked about in the press is in the region of £6million, a sum that both Liverpool and Spurs can easily match, and indeed there are reports that Tottenham are so keen that they will table a double bid.

Ajax will not stand in the player’s way and would prefer a quick sale. With Spartak sniffing, this could see Liverpool increase their interest as with Martin Skrtel likely to be on his way, the Anfield side will need to find a replacement.
