Hull may have claimed an impressive win over Leicester City in the opening round of fixtures but caretaker boss Mike Phelan says they are in desperate need of new faces.

The Tigers have been through a summer of disarray after Steve Bruce resigned as manager, apparently due to a lack of transfer activity at the newly-promoted club.

There could be a change in ownership in the coming weeks at the KCOM Stadium but Phelan says his side cannot afford to wait any longer to bring in some reinforcements.

“It’s always difficult when as late as we are,” he told reporters. “We are actively trying to bring players in but time is getting short.

I said last week that this could be a big week for us but not a lot has happened. It doesn’t mean to say we haven’t done anything in terms of phone calls and searching for players.”

Phelan does believe the current squad can compete at Premier League level, but he fears it could be a season of struggle for the Tigers regardless if they don’t add to their options.

“It’s just difficult because everybody is looking in now,” he said. “We’ve done well to get one result.

I think people will look and think ‘Hull are having a go and they have got determined players that want to do well’. So anybody looking to join Hull now can see what this group can offer, it just needs additions.”

He added: “When you look at the depth of the squad, we need players all over that add to what we’ve got and enhance the quality.”

Hull travel to Swansea City on Saturday and they are 4.75 to secure all three points.

Hull are 1.67 to be relegated, fellow newly-promoted outfit Middlesbrough are 3.25 and Watford can be backed at 3.50.
