Roberto Martinez is hoping to strengthen his Everton squad with at least two new signings when the transfer window opens next month.

The Blues have made an excellent start to the season and the midweek victory over Manchester United moved them up to fifth in the table, level on points with Liverpool in fourth.

The Toffees have managed to cope without the loss of key players Arouna Kone and Darron Gibson, but Martinez says he will try his best to replace them when the window opens.

Martinez knows he needs more strength in depth if Everton are to maintain their push for Champions League football and has already identified the players he wants.

“We are going to use the window in January to try to help the team because we lost two players for the long term,” said the Spaniard.

“Arouna and Darron are two very important players for us so we will try to see if we can identify one or two players that can help the group.

“We have been working hard to identify who can help the group and that is what we are looking for in January.”

Meanwhile, Martinez has confirmed that Kone’s knee injury is long term and it is highly unlikely he play again this season.

“Arouna started the first part of his recovery and it is going to be long term, as expected,” he added.

“I don’t think we are going to see Arouna this season. If we can get him back for the final two months he will have done really well.”
