Manchester United’s Phil Jones believes the arrival of Juan Mata at Old Trafford will be the catalyst to spark the Premier League champions back into life this season.

The reigning English champions, who are 67.00 at present to retain their title, have seen plenty of column inches written about their poor performances this season and their apparent rapid decline as a force in the top flight since the departure of manager Sir Alex Ferguson last season.

However, thanks to their rivals Chelsea, United and their boss David Moyes have been handed a lifeline with the arrival Spain international Mata, who made his debut in a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

Not to say that United would not have beaten the Bluebirds without the services of their record signing but it was more than apparent the lift the Red Devils had with Mata’s influence.

The feel good factor was not just on the pitch and in the stands but in the dressing room as well, with England international Jones praising the influence Mata has already had in his very short time at Old Trafford.

He said: “It makes an impact in the dressing room when you sign a player of that calibre.

“He is such a talented player on the ball. He has definitely lifted spirits in the dressing room and especially in training.”

With the transfer window closing on Friday night, it will be interesting to see if Moyes can give United’s hopes of at least a top four finish a shot in the arm with any more signings to bolster his squad ahead of the business end of the campaign.
