Karim Benzema’s late goal ensured that the race for the La Liga title remains wide open after Real Madrid held League leaders Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 in the Madrid derby on Sunday at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid led the La Liga with 3 points after Barcelona had beaten Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday, but there were 5 points between the Madrid rivals before Sunday’s clash.

Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez gave Diego Simeone’s side the lead in the fifteenth minute but they failed to add another as the game went on.

French striker Karim Benzema ensured both sides shared the spoils and keep the La Liga race in balance with his late goal in the 88 minutes of the game.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has refused to concede the title to their city rivals despite being five points behind a team that has a game in hand.

“It’s a point, we’re alive and we’re going to keep fighting. There’s still a long way to go in La Liga and with a lot of points at stake, we’re going to fight until the end. Things can change quickly. We’re doing the right things, although we know we can improve and that’s what we’re going to do. We wanted to play better in the second half today because the first half wasn’t good. The attitude was very important to change things.” Zidane said.

The result favors Barcelona who won 2-0 against Osasuna on Saturday. Ronald Koeman’s side is three points behind Atletico who has a game in hand.

In other La Liga matches, Real Sociedad defeated Levante 1-0 while Huesca lost 4-3 to Celta Vigo. Cadiz beat Eibar 1-0 while Elche stunned Sevilla 2-1 and Valladolid beat Getafe 2-1.
