Barcelona’s new captain Lionel Messi has promised supporters his side will do everything in their
power to bring home the Champions League trophy this season.

The Catalans, under the guidance of Ernesto Valverde, enjoyed a brilliant domestic campaign last season as they won both the Copa del Rey and La Liga trophies for the 30th and 25th times respectively.

However, the Spanish giants were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League by Roma after failing to make the most of a 4-1 lead from the first leg at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona last won Europe’s elite competition in the 2014/15 campaign and there is a certain degree of pressure on the players to deliver on one of the biggest stages of them all this term.

Argentina international Messi has inherited the captain’s armband from Andres Iniesta this year following the midfielder’s move to Japanese club Vissel Kobe in the summer.

The forward has his first public address as club captain and he insists the whole team are eager to land the Champions League trophy.

“Last season was really good as we did the double but we all felt bad about how it went in the Champions League,” Messi said.

“We promise that this season we will do all we can to bring that beautiful trophy back to the Camp Nou.”

Barcelona kick off their domestic campaign at home to Alaves on Saturday and the hosts are 1.11 favourites to win, a draw is priced at 9.50 whilst the visitors are huge 29.00 outsiders.
