Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has signed a one-year contract extension at Camp Nou.

Valverde joined Barca from Athletic Bilbao when he replaced Luis Enrique in May 2017 and is now under contract until the summer of 2020.

Valverde also has the option of a further year, which would see him remain in charge until the end of the 2020-21 season.

The 55-year-old Spaniard led the Catalan giants to La Liga glory in his first season in charge as well as the Copa del Rey. Barca did fall short in the Champions League last season however, with a shock quarter-final exit at the hands of Italian outfit Roma.

The Blaugrana are well placed to successfully defend their La Liga crown this season as they currently hold a six-point lead at the top of the standings.

Barcelona are also through to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and take on Real Madrid in the second leg of the competition at the Bernabeu on February 27, with the tie finely poised after a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou in the first leg.

Valverde’s side take on Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League and are away for the first leg on Tuesday.

Barcelona are 6.00 to win the Champions League outright, La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid can be backed at 21.00 and Premier League champions Manchester City are the 3.75 favourites.
