Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 win over Alaves thanks to Luis Suarez’s second-half goal at the Wanda Metropolitano in the La Liga on Sunday evening.
The win returns Diego Simeone’s side to winning ways after losing 2-0 to Chelsea in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 ties.
The current La Liga leaders were knocked out 3-0 on aggregate after losing the first leg 1-0.
Alaves were without a win in their last five games before the visit to the capital and they almost secured a point close to the end of the game but Joselu missed a spot-kick in the 87th minute.
The win helps Atletico Madrid maintain their lead at the top with four points ahead of Barcelona who defeated Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Real Madrid is still in third and six points behind their city rivals despite winning 3-1 at Celta Vigo on Saturday.
A brace from French forward Karim Benzema and a late goal from Marco Asensio meant that Santi Mina’s first-half goal was barely a consolation.
In other results from the La Liga at the weekend, Villarreal defeated Cadiz 2-1 on Sunday while Valencia also had the same scoreline against Granada on Sunday.
Gerard Moreno and Carlos Bacca scored for the Yellow Submarines while Alex got one back for Cadiz.
Getafe and Elche played out a 1-1 draw so also did Athletic Bilbao and Eibar and Valladolid against Sevilla.
Huesca and Osasuna also played a 0-0 draw on Saturday. Barcelona ran riot against Real Sociedad, after they won 6-1 away from home. Sergino Dest and Lionel Messi both scored twice as Barca convincingly thrashed Sociedad to it pressure on Atletico Madrid.
