Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho insists he could not ‘demand more’ from his players following their 2-0 home triumph over Southampton on Friday night.
A goal in either half from Zlatan Ibrahimovic was enough to hand the Red Devils a routine victory at Old Trafford, in what was Mourinho’s first competitive home match in charge since he succeeded Louis van Gaal as manager in May.
United have now won both their Premier League matches so far this season, as well as claiming a 2-1 victory over Leicester in the Community Shield, and the Portuguese coach admits he could not have expected more from his players during Friday’s match.
“We were always in control, we won comfortably and the result could [have been] bigger,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “It’s impossible to [go] faster than what we are doing.
The way we are playing, the kind of football we are trying to to play, the way the team is defending.
“It’s impossible to demand more from the boys. [There’s a] great spirit, everyone is working very hard and I’m pleased.”
The 53-year-old reserved special praise for Paul Pogba, who was making his second debut for the club following his world-record move from Juventus, and Mourinho is convinced there is still a lot more to come from the France international.
“I think he was so good, everything individually was so good, everything collectively he is learning, I am very happy,” said Mourinho.
“One day he can play even more offensively than he did today, and he is a player who needs that freedom that he has. You will see the areas that he covered offensively and defensively.”
United are next in action when they take on Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on August 27, and they are on offer at 1.50 to win the match, while the Tigers are priced at 7.00 and the draw is available at 4.00.
