Former Liverpool right-back Javier Manquillo insists Sunderland manager David Moyes was the key factor in his move to the club last month.

The former Reds loanee failed to impress the Anfield hierarchy after signing a two-year deal in 2014.

He signed at the same time as left-back Alberto Moreno but his loan was cut short after just one year and 19 appearances.

The Atletico Madrid man spent last season on loan at Marseille, where he played in 31 games, but now he is ready for a new challenge.

After completing his season-long loan to the Black Cats, the 22-year-old is adamant he is cut out for the Premier League.

Manquillo insists he is an improved player and now the Madrid-born star is determined to impress Moyes. He told the Liverpool Echo: “I played 42 games last season at the highest level.

That has given me a lot of experience I unfortunately did not get at Liverpool. “Of course I am a more mature player than I was there.

There were no nerves at coming back to England. The major difference was the manager convinced me to come. He made me feel wanted.

“He was a key figure in me coming back. I have no fear whatsoever.

I am looking forward to coming back here to the Premier League with a project I identify with.”

Manquillo will be hoping to help Sunderland climb the Premier League table but they are still expected to be fighting relegation this season. The Black Cats can be backed at 2.63 to go down.
