Under pressure Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen has admitted his side have hit “rock bottom” ahead of the former Manchester United coach’s return to Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Dutchman’s comments came after watching his side suffer a 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage to League One outfit Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
With Fulham now out of the cup they can now focus on closing the four-point gap between themselves and safety in the Premier League table.
A miserable run has seen Meulensteen’s side move to bottom of the league and after that defeat against the Blades, the coach admitted that times are tough.
He said: “We know that we’ve only got ourselves to blame.
“At the end of the day, that’s what we need to do. We need to look each other in the eye and say, ‘Let’s pick ourselves up and dig ourselves out of it’.
“If you talk about this game and you say, ‘Have we hit rock-bottom?’ We probably have. OK, fine, that’s it.
“And if we have hit rock-bottom, it can’t get any worse and it can only get better, so that’s what we need to work for.”
Of course things don’t get any easier for Fulham as they travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face the reigning Premier League champions.
The Cottagers are 10.81 to secure an unlikely win, 7.29 to earn a point and 1.10 to continue their miserable run of form in the top flight.
