Nottingham Forest reached the last 16 of the FA Cup by coming away from Preston North End with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday.

Forest turned up at Deepdale in confident mood after a recent run in the Championship that has elevated them into the play-off places, but were facing a Preston side sitting in fourth spot in League One.

The visitors stroked the ball around well early on and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 18 minutes thanks to a chip from Jamie Mackie.

However, if Forest thought that the rest of the evening would be easy, they were wrong, as the home side tore into them for the remainder of the match.

Preston hit the woodwork twice and had two claims for handball in the area turned down in the second half, so can count themselves extremely unlucky not to have got something out of this.

And as they huffed and puffed to no avail, Forest landed the killer blow in added time courtesy of Darius Henderson to make it 2-0 and book a trip to Sheffield United in the 6th round.

The Blades of course are now managed by former Derby boss Nigel Clough, so he and Forest coach Billy Davies have taken each other on before, and Clough will already know that Forest are now on a 15-match unbeaten run, while his own side languish deep in the League One relegation zone.

Forest meanwhile return to the task of trying to achieve promotion to the Premier League this weekend, and face a trip to the seaside on Saturday to take on Blackpool. Forest are 1.97 to win with Dafabet.
