Wolves defender Matt Doherty believes they are capable of enjoying a strong run in the FA Cup this season.

The Molineux outfit stormed to the Championship title last term and were heavily fancied to ease into Premier League life in 2018-19.

They have lived up to expectations and currently sit seventh in the top-flight and without concern over a potential relegation scrap. Their lofty league position has afforded them the opportunity to put their focus on attempting to end the campaign with some silverware.

Doherty netted twice to help Wolves overcome Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Tuesday and their reward is a fifth round tie with Bristol City.

With the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton and West Ham already dropping out of the competition, Doherty has urged Wolves, who are priced at 9.00 to win the FA Cup outright, to take full advantage.

“We fancy our chances,” Doherty said. “Considering we are seventh in the league now and there are not many Premier League teams left we have got to look at it and back ourselves to go and win a trophy.

“If we beat Bristol now we are not far away from Wembley. It will be one more round after that.

“Everything is going in the right direction and we have to make sure we finish the season off really well and see how far we can get in the Cup.

“So it opened up for us – if we can play well and get into the later rounds who knows what can happen. It is important for us.”
