Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes the transfer window should be shut when the season gets under way so clubs can put all their focus on preparing for matches.

The Toffees are currently in a war of words with defending Premier League champions Chelsea, who are reportedly preparing a third offer for defender John Stones.

Martinez feels the speculation surrounding the young England international is affecting his mind-set and the Spaniard has criticised the handling of the situation.

Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand has also voiced his opinion on the matter and insists Stones would be better off signing for the Red Devils than joining Chelsea.

The youngster did play the full 90 minutes for Everton in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Watford but Martinez feels changes should be made to the transfer window in order to make things fairer.

“The window, when it is open and we have to prepare for official games, is very, very unfair. I don’t think it is right,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think we should have a period where we assemble our squad, and then once the first league game starts everyone is focused.

“I think we forget that footballers have a human side and it can really affect. Players like Stones and (Ross) Barkley have an incredible future and will attract interest from the outside.”

It is unclear whether Stones will remain at Goodison Park but, with Chelsea said to be weighing up a bid around the £30million, the temptation of playing in the Champions League may be too much to resist.

Everton are back in Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to Southampton and the visitors are priced at 4.00 to win, a draw is 3.30 and the Saints are 2.00 favourites.
