Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer has challenged his side to replicate last season’s impressive FA Cup in this year’s League Cup.

The former Premier League outfit were within one win of Wembley last term after reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Liverpool in a replay.

It has been a different story in the League Cup, however, as Rovers have been knocked out in the past three seasons by teams in the lower tiers of English football.

MK Dons secured a 2-1 success back in 2012 before Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United, who are in League Two and League One respectively, piled on the misery with shock victories, and it was Bowyer who was in charge for the latter two matches.

The former Rotherham full-back is hoping to put the bad memories behind him on Tuesday night with a win over Shrewsbury and has called for his players to go on another cup run and give the fans something to cheer about.

“Shrewsbury are a decent outfit,” he said. “They gained promotion last year, they’ve got some good athletes and some promising young players, and they’ve got the momentum.

“It’ll be a challenge, for sure, but we want to have a cup run like we did last year when we got to the FA Cup quarter-finals and took Liverpool to a replay.

“It was a fantastic experience for our players and one we want to try and do again in this competition.”

Blackburn lost their Championship opener 2-1 to Wolves on Saturday but Tuesday’s hosts are 1.83 favourites to progress in the cup, a draw is 3.60 while the visitors are priced at 4.33 to cause a huge upset.
