Everton boss Roberto Martinez has insisted that Ross Barkley and John Stones have proven that they are ready for a call-up to the England side for this summer’s World Cup.

Martinez has enjoyed a fantastic first year in charge of the Merseyside club, narrowly missing out on Champions League football but at least securing a place in next season’s Europa League.

The Spaniard has always offered chances to young players in his previous jobs with Swansea and Wigan and he has done exactly the same with the Toffees.

Barkley has already received high-praise from Martinez who described the 20-year-old as ‘a diamond of English football’, and he has subsequently earned three caps for the Three Lions, albeit all as a substitute.

Stones was thrust into the Everton starting line-up in the absence of regular centre back Phil Jagielka and has impressed with some solid performances.

Martinez said: “This season Ross and John have shown that they are ready, their contribution has been phenomenal.

“They’re great examples for Everton but also for English football in general. As young players their character and attitude is fantastic and their talent is for everyone to see.

“When they’re allowed to come through into the first team is up to the manager, but I would absolutely be happy for both Ross and John to go to the World Cup.”

England are valued at 30.00 to win the World Cup and boss Roy Hodgson is set to announce his provisional 30-man squad on Monday ahead of a training camp before travelling to South America.
