Ron Vlaar Everton transfer

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is reportedly considering a move for free agent Ron Vlaar as cover for the likes of John Stones and Phil Jagielka.

The Holland international, who was linked with moves to Manchester United and Liverpool at one stage of his career, has been without a club since leaving Aston Villa in the summer after his contract expired.

He has been hampered by a serious knee injury for several months now and the defender has had to work tirelessly to get himself back to full fitness.

Vlaar is rumoured to be injury-free and the powerful centre-back is now looking to secure at least a short-term deal until the end of the current campaign.

Goodison Park could be the next destination for the Dutchman after reports recently linked the Toffees with a move as Martinez eyes defensive reinforcements.

Jagielka has been hampered with a couple of niggling issues this season and Stones, who is quickly becoming one of the most highly-rated players in the league, is expected to be targeted by Chelsea in the next transfer window.

The defending Premier League champions failed to land the youngster in the summer but, after a dreadful start to their season, the Blues could break the bank to sign the ever-improving youngster.

Vlaar would add a great deal of experience to the Everton team and the former Villa skipper could be an astute signing by Martinez, who will only have to shell out on wages with the defender being available on a free.

Everton return to action on Saturday when they take on the Villans at home and the hosts are favourites at 1.57, a draw is priced at 4.00 while the visitors are outsiders at 6.00.
