UEFA will announce a new set of awards and incentives to the winners of the Europa League to help improve its credibility.

With the set-up now, Europe’s second-tier competition does not guarantee a European spot. However, the statement on Friday plans to give the cup winners a chance to feature in the Champions League next season.

Right now, clubs can reach the Europa by league finish or winning domestic trophies.

The new rule will not affect each domestic league’s allotted UEFA Champions League qualification slots, but an extra place will be given in cases where the Europa winner is unable to reach enough points to make it to the allowed spots in their table.

For the Champions League, the winners are automatically allowed back to the competition – giving them the chance to defend their title.

Chelsea, 2012-13 Cup winners, qualified in the European Cup the following year after finishing third in the Premier League.
