Spurs captain Hugo Lloris is demanding better from his teammates in Europe this season ahead of their Europa League opener against Azerbaijan champions Qarabag.

Tottenham begin Group J at White Hart Lane before facing searching trips to Anderlecht and Monaco and their French goalkeeper wants them strongly focused on performing well in Europe this season.

Tottenham have in the past been accused of treating the Europa League with a degree of contempt but Lloris points to the fillet of Champions League entry for the competition winners and says that should be the focus during the competition.

“I expect more from Tottenham and I expect more from me as well. We need to go as far as possible in the competition,” said Lloris.

“We know it is a trophy to get and you play only to win. There is also a possibility to get into the Champions League if you win the final. It is so far away that we are focused on the group stage and the target is to finish first.”

Lloris highlighted the need to make a positive start by beating Qarabag in London ahead of their daunting away double-header and he says Tottenham have to show the proper attitude towards the Europa League from the word go.

“Each game is important and we know we need a first win, because the next two games are away against very good teams in Anderlecht and Monaco,” he said.

“We expect a tough game because European competition is always hard so we need to be focused and have the mentality of winning.”

Tottenham are 1.33 to defeat Qarabag at White Hart Lane while Mauricio Pochettino’s side are 2.00 to win Group J outright.
