Probable starting Lineup: Anthony Lopes; Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro; Danilo Pereira, Ruben Neves, Bruno Fernandes; Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota
Defence: Portugal’s defence has improved drastically over the last few years. Premier League’s player of the season Ruben Dias will be the leader of their backline. His Manchester City teammate Joao Cancelo will be partnered with the likes of Pepe and either Raphael Guerreiro or Nuno Mendes in the back four. Anthony Lopes is expected to be the preferred choice in goal. They also have good depth with players such as Rui Patricio, Nelsen Semedo and Jose Fonte on the bench.
Midfield: In midfield, they have a variety of options to choose from. Bruno Fernandes will be the first name in the midfield section as he has been on fire during the 18 months. Danilo Pereira should be the man to protect the backline if the last international break is anything to go by. Depending on their approach, either Ruben Neves or Bernardo Silva will be the third midfielder. Considering they face France and Germany in the group stage, the former should be preferred to offer a more defensive presence.
Attack: Portugal are stacked in the attacking department as well. Cristiano Ronaldo’s inclusion is a no brainer. Diogo Jota’s fine season at Anfield should be enough to earn his place in the team. Bernardo Silva is likely to feature in the attack if he isn’t a part of the midfield trio. Prolific striker Andre Silva and wonderkid Joao Felix can also feature in the starting 11 if Portugal opt for a more attacking approach. Pedro Goncalves has been the star for Sporting this season which makes him someone to watch out for.
