Jack Wilshere opened his England account with two stunning goals in a 3-2 win against Slovenia – then said he did not want the season to end.

The 23-year-old had not registered in 27 caps before his brace helped Roy Hodgson’s side come from behind and seal a hard-fought victory to extend their 100 per cent Group E record in qualifying for next summer’s European Championship in France.

The Arsenal midfielder, whose domestic season for FA Cup winners Arsenal was blighted by an ankle injury, said he was delighted to score for his country in Ljubljana.

“It’s a great feeling,” Wilshere told reporters. “It’s nice to get off the mark. Just playing for your country is a fantastic feeling but scoring is even better.

“Hopefully I can get a few more in the future.”

Victory was sealed by Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney’s late strike and it means England have won all six of their Euro 2016 Group E qualifiers so far.

It was all the sweeter for Wilshere, who has been used by Hodgson primarily in a deep-lying role, off the back of a frustrating season for Arsenal in which his ankle problems resurfaced.

The midfielder this month denied he may have to leave the north London giants because of increased competition for places in Arsene Wenger’s side and on Sunday reaffirmed his desire to get more games under his belt.

“I’m in a strange position where I don’t want the season to end. I’ve just come back,” he added. “I’m playing well but luckily this year it’s just a three-week break.

“I’ll have a week’s rest and then I’ll get back in the gym to maintain my fitness because next season is a big season for me.”

Arsenal are currently priced 5.50 in the Premier League outright winner betting for next season.
