Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has urged his squad to keep their heads up after they came within minutes of claiming a historic Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Saturday.

Atletico took the lead in Lisbon courtesy of a header from defender Diego Godin, who grabbed his second goal in the space of a week after scoring at the Nou Camp.

However, it was to be the cruellest of endings for Los Rojiblancos as Sergio Ramos netted the equaliser with 93 minutes on the clock to force extra time.

Real proved to be too strong in the additional half an hour of play and added a further three goals to their tally thanks to Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It left a sour taste in the mouth of Simeone, whose side were on course to secure a double after claiming their first La Liga title since 1996 last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Barcelona.

Simeone said following the loss that it is important for the players to move on quickly and start thinking ahead to next season.

He said: ?You have to look at it overall.

“Madrid were better in the second half, they kept us in our half and we couldn’t get out. Football is wonderful because of that. People say that winning is the most important thing, but the support we’ve had from people tells you there’s another side to it. I told my players that, when you’ve played as well as they did tonight, to keep their heads up and start thinking about next season.”
