Chelsea are set to return to Atletico Madrid after agreeing a deal with the Spanish champions to sign Brazilian defender Felipe Luis after months of negotiations.

Luis made it clear that he wanted to secure a move away from the Vicente Calderon after the final whistle of the season was blown.

However, Atleti were reluctant to allow another one of their title winning squad depart without a fight as Diego Simeone bids to try and remain competitive for a third successive campaign.

Los Rojiblancos have already sold star striker Diego Costa to Chelsea for £32million, following the confirmation of the deal earlier this week and they look set to lose a second man to the lure of the Premier League.

Luis will now fly in to London to discuss personal terms with the club before he undergoes a medical ahead of completing the switch.

The Brazil international featured 44 times last term as the club won La Liga for the first time since 1996 and reached the Champions League final, only to lose to rivals Real Madrid.

Luis was overlooked by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the World Cup in his homeland but he hopes that a move to a club consistently challenging for silverware may put him in a better position.

The 28-year-old is expected to be a direct replacement for Ashley Cole, who has already left Stamford Bridge and linked up with his now employers, Roma.

Luis Tweeted: “It has been a few memorable years.

“Thank you for supporting me always Atletico.”
