Leeds United have confirmed the news that defender Pontus Jansson has been ruled out for three weeks with a knee injury.

The centre-back suffered the injury in his side’s 1-0 Championship defeat to promotion rivals Sheffield United at Elland Road on Saturday.

The Swede finished the match in goal after donning the gloves when goalkeeper Kiko Casilla was sent off for cynically bringing down Billy Sharp when one-on-one.

The 28-year-old will no longer be joining up with the Sweden squad for their forthcoming Euro 2020 Qualifiers against Romania and Norway.

“Jansson will begin his rehab at Thorp Arch with the Leeds United medical team this week,” said a statement from Leeds. Jansson will also miss Leeds’ next match against Millwall at Elland Road.

The Whites, who have dropped to third in the table following their defeat to the Blades, are 1.53 to get back to winning ways against the Lions, who are 6.50.

But Jansson could be in contention for Leeds’ trip to St Andrew’s to face Birmingham City a week later.

The Whites are now five points adrift of leaders Norwich City, who face a testing trip to Middlesbrough after the international break. The Canaries are slight favourites at 2.60 to come away with a win from Teesside with Boro 2.80 and the draw available at 3.30.
