Tony Mowbray is hoping young Blackburn duo Derrick Williams and Ryan Nyambe can shake off injuries they sustained playing in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Rovers, who are priced at 6.00 to win League One, kicked off their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stoke City’s Under-21 side at Ewood Park, courtesy of a late strike from Joseph Nuttall.

However, it came at a cost as defensive duo Williams and Nyambe were forced off early after sustaining knocks.

Williams was replaced by Matthew Platt after just 38 minutes while Nyambe only made it to the 46th minute before limping off.

Mowbray made 10 changes to his starting XI for the clash and feels the high-intensity start to the season is affecting his players.

Rovers will need to assess the injured duo to learn the full extent of their injuries although Mowbray is hopeful they will be available when they travel to Rochdale on September 9.

Mowbray told Blackburn’s official website: “We picked up a couple of knocks which is very disappointing.

“We made 10 changes and Derrick didn’t even get to 45 minutes. So that shows the intensity that they’ve tried to play the games at over the last few games, and that was maybe a step too far.

“Hopefully it is not anything too serious, just a niggle I hope. Ryan came off at half-time with a slight twist to his ankle, so we didn’t want to take any chances with him.”
