Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham will have to win at Liverpool when the two sides go head-to-head, if Spurs are to have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Tottenham jumped into fifth place after beating Everton 1-0 on Sunday afternoon and now sit just three points behind Liverpool, who occupy the final Champions League position.

It looks like being a three-horse race between, Spurs, Everton and Liverpool for fourth spot and Vertonghen believes the clash at Anfield will be crucial.

Liverpool have been scoring goals for fun this season and put five past Arsenal at the weekend. Spurs know that feeling well after the Reds also bagged five at White Hart Lane back in December and the Tottenham defender is out for revenge on March 30th.

“We probably need a win, so we will go for that,” the Belgium international said.

“It was a bad day for us when we lost 5-0 at home to Liverpool in December but that game didn’t reflect our strengths compared with theirs.

“We beat them at home last year and we went 2-1 up at Anfield last March, where we were the better side (Spurs eventually lost 3-2). That was one of our better performances last season.

“But we can do much better than we did against Everton.”

However there are some big games before then as they take on Newcastle on Wednesday night before playing Norwich at the weekend and Tim Sherwood’s men cannot afford any slip ups.
