Everton boss Roberto Martinez has told Celtic to forget about trying to re-sign Aiden McGeady this summer as he wants him to remain at Goodison Park.

The Republic of Ireland international spent six years at Parkhead before moving to Spartak Moscow in 2010, collecting four Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

Reports earlier this summer indicated the Hoops were looking into whether it would be possible to bring McGeady back to Glasgow his struggles to hold down a regular place in the Everton first-team last season.

The 29-year-old started just 10 Premier League matches during the 2014/15 campaign due to a combination of form and injury issues.

McGeady’s lack of game time prompted speculation he could be made available by Everton but Martinez insists that is not the case, claiming he still views him as a valuable member of his squad.

The Spanish coach says he has received no contact from Celtic or Sunderland, who have also been linked with McGeady, and says he has not taken him on the club’s pre-season trip to Singapore due to a hamstring issue.

“With Aiden, there is nothing,” he said.

“I wouldn’t like to go into every rumour and justify every rumour that is in the media. Otherwise, we would never finish.
“Aiden McGeady is an exceptional footballer and he has a talent that is very important for our squad.

“All we need now is to find a solution to that niggling hamstring problem that he has been carrying and I hope that Aiden can enjoy his football.

“There has not been a conversation with another club about a possible transfer. What I am looking for is for him to be fully fit.”

Celtic begin their season on Wednesday against Icelandic outfit Stjarnan in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier.

The Hoops are 1.05 to win the first game at Parkhead, with their opponents 34.00 and the draw 12.00.
