Borussia Dortmund shot themselves in the foot and became a victim of their success as they let go a one-goal lead twice to draw 2-2 at Frankfurt, with Lucien Favre’s men making life difficult for themselves at the Commerzbank Arena.

Dortmund raced to a one-goal just 10 minutes into the game, with Axel Witsel opening his goal-scoring account for the season after a brilliant team move.

Dortmund’s early goal saw them relaxed and adopted confidence they would overpower their opponents, this backfired against them as Andre Silva scored against the run of play just before half-time.

Axel Witsel provided a stunning assist for Jadon Sancho as he scores his third of the season for Dortmund which put them back in the driving seat against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The host did not allow the goal to weigh them down; instead, they grew into the game and fought back, looking for another equalizer. This made Dortmund looked vulnerable at the back with just a one-goal lead. Frankfurt finally found their way back into the game in the 88th minute after Thomas Delaney turned the ball into his up net.

Axel Witsel’s goal on Sunday was his seventh since he arrived last season. But the Belgian’s performance was top notch. He was dogged in midfield covering all areas of the pitch. That makes him one of the first names on the team sheet alongside Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus. The 30-year old is an integral part of Dortmund’s midfield partnering Thomas Delaney in a double-pivot midfield.

Dortmund’s next match will be at home to Werder Bremen before Champions league action retires as they travel to Slavia Praha with all four teams in Group F having a point each going to matchday two.
