Brendan Rodgers is adamant he remains the right man to lead Liverpool despite a disappointing end to the season.

Liverpool eventually dropped out of the race for a top-four finish while also losing at the semi-final stage of both the Capital One Cup and the FA Cup.

Rodgers is expected to face some tough questions from the Liverpool owners after the season ends at Stoke City on Sunday.

The former Swansea City boss says he is still “up for the challenge” of taking Liverpool to the next level and he wants to get back on track for next season.

At Liverpool’s annual awards night on Tuesday, Rodgers said: “The club will continue to work hard to improve the squad and next year provides another great opportunity for us like last season.”

After coming so close to winning thePremier League title just 12 months ago, this campaign has been a reality check for Liverpool in the wake of losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Rodgers will also end the season by waving goodbye to captain Steven Gerrard who heads off to conclude his career at LA Galaxy.

His Reds squad appears to be in need of an overhaul, with striker Mario Balotelli becoming an increasingly peripheral figure at Anfield as the season winds down.

Raheem Sterling is rumoured to be set to tell Liverpool this week that he will not sign a contract extension to keep him on Merseyside, thus ensuring a summer of speculation over the winger’s future.

Liverpool are 2.12 to win at Stoke on Sunday, with Mark Hughes’ side 3.43 and the draw is 3.26.
