Cardiff say they are confident that Aron Gunnarsson will be fit for the start of the new Premier League season.
The midfielder has been struggling with a shoulder problem, which he suffered during a recent match for his country, Iceland.
It was originally thought that Gunnarsson would be sidelined for up to three months, missing the opening few weeks of Cardiff’s first season in the Premier League.
But manager Malky Mackay has been boosted by the news that the 24-year-old is winning his race to be fit for the start of the new campaign – which is due to begin on the weekend of August 17.
The Bluebirds boss revealed: “We think Aron will be okay for the start of the season. We should have a much clearer picture next week.”
Gunnarsson played a key role in helping the club win promotion last term, playing in all but one of the club’s 46 league games.
Meanwhile, Mackay says it is important that Cardiff try to integrate some homegrown players as well as adding new faces to their squad.
The Championship winners are keen to bring players through the Academy system and have added to the coaching staff there over the last few weeks.
