Arsene Wenger has backed Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez to fire Arsenal into the top four of the Premier League after they both scored against QPR.

The Gunners remain third after the 2-1 victory at Loftus Road but were unable to pull away from their rivals as Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool also won.

Wenger was a happy man as Sanchez grabbed his first goal in eight games, while he also had praise for Giroud, who has come in for some heavy criticism following a poor display against Monaco.

The French tactician was delighted with the spirit shown by both players and believes they can now spearhead Arsenal’s push for a Champions League spot.

“It’s good because when you don’t score for seven or eight games it is on your mind even if you say it’s not,” said Wenger of Sanchez’s neat finish.

“But he took his chance well and he’s tricky and has a short back-lift and scored a good goal.

“He never gives up and that’s the strength of a good striker as well.

“Olivier has that mental strength as well, he’s strong mentally too. He can take criticism and respond, and he’s shown that.

“I feel that was a bit harsh on him because he missed some chances but that can happen.”

Arsenal are next in action when they travel to take on Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend.

The Gunners are priced at 2.90 to win at Old Trafford, while United are 2.30 favourites and the draw is on offer at 3.33.
