England bowler Graham Onions looks set to be ruled out of final Ashes Test against Australia after breaking a finger while playing for Durham.

Onions just missed out on selection for the fourth Test on his home ground, but was hoping to make it into the side for the final showdown before injury struck.

The player broke his finger while attempting a caught and bowled in the Yorkshire Bank 40 clash against Scotland on Sunday.

Onions is now rated a big doubt for Durham’s County Championship match against Surrey, which begins the day after the Test match.

A Durham statement read: “Graham Onions has been ruled out of Durham’s Yorkshire Bank fixtures this week after he suffered a broken finger in yesterday’s match against Scotland.

“Onions has a break in his little finger on his right hand in his knuckle joint which was sustained in an attempt to catch the ball off his own bowling.

“At this stage Onions is hoping to be fit to play in Durham’s next LV= County Championship match against Surrey commencing on Thursday August 22.”

Onions has confirmed he has not travelled with the rest of the squad to Surrey and it is highly unlikely he will figure against the Australians.
