Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson revealed he is keen to try and reclaim his place in the Test squad for this winter’s Ashes series Down Under.

Johnson was overlooked by selectors for the 3-0 Ashes defeat over the summer and instead was left to settle for a place in the Twenty20 and One Day International sides.

The 31-year-old claimed two wickets in the first T20 tie on Thursday night at Southampton?s Ageas Bowl, reaching speeds of 93mph.

The Baggy Greens clinched the victory by 39 runs to pick up their first result over the hosts this summer and their first win in 200 days.

The left-armer revealed that he hopes to striker “fear” into batsmen and hopes that his performances for the shorter versions of the game do not go unnoticed.

Johnson said: “I’d love to get back playing Test match cricket and play in the next Ashes series,” said Johnson.

“When I first started playing cricket one of the main reasons I wanted to play was to get out batsmen – and to be able to hopefully put a bit of fear into their eyes.

“That’s why I want to play. At the moment I’m really enjoying myself.”

The Western Australia man has fallen down the pecking order due to the emergence of young bowlers like James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc, as well as suffering from an injury which kept him sidelined for most of last year.

Johnson added: “I’ve felt like my bowling is exactly where I want it to be now. I’m bowling with good pace and when the

conditions are right I can swing the ball. I can bowl that good short ball again.”
