Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is in talks to take on women’s world number one Serena Williams in a charity match in Las Vegas next year.

The idea was first mooted by a fan on Twitter but now seems set to become a reality as talks are expected over the next month to arrange a date.

During Wimbledon earlier this year, one of Williams’ followers suggested the American star could beat Murray on grass and the Scot indicated he would be open to taking on the top ranked women’s player.

It is now understood that talks have begun between the pair, who train near each other in Miami, and the match is likely to take place between Wimbledon and the American hard court campaign in 2014, with all profits going to Murray and Williams’ personal charities.

The match is likely to take place over two sets and involve some kind of handicap in Williams’ favour.

Murray is currently sidelined as he is recovering from a minor shoulder operation but the British number one is expected to be fit for the Australian Open early next year.
