Kevin Stadler leads by one shot after a rain-affected first round of The Barclays during a difficult day in which just 59 players managed to complete 18 holes.

The first day’s play at the Liberty National course was strung out over 11 hours due to heavy rain at times, but Stadler eventually emerged as leader by just a shot from Ryan Palmer, Henrik Stenson and Camilo Villegas.

Stadler carded seven birdies on his way to 64 and was helped by a late collapse from Villegas, who suffered two late bogies to drop back into the chasing pack.

Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott were among the half of the field that must return early on Friday to finish their first rounds and Stadler admitted he was relieved to have got the full round in on day one.

“I don’t know what time we are going to start tomorrow (Friday),” he said. “It’s going to be late, though, but (I) prefer to be on this side where we don’t have a marathon day, but we only had to play 18 holes, so it won’t take as big of a toll as the other guys, for sure.”

Jason Day and Matt Kuchar were two shots off the lead on five under, while Tiger Woods was in a group of seven further back on four under.
