Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis has insisted he is free from injury and is targeting a first-team spot under Manuel Pellegrini.

Demichelis moved to the Etihad Stadium this summer but he’s had to wait for his chance after picking up a knee ligament injury in pre-season. The former Bayern Munich player was involved in a bizarre transfer – moving to City for £3.5million just weeks after signing for Malaga on a free transfer.

The defender made his debut on Sunday against Chelsea in the Premier League, but he couldn’t help prevent his side slip to a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old is excited to be playing again but he is confident there is a lot more to come from him as he tries to help his new side lift trophies this season.

He told the Manchester Evening News:  “I feel like I am a 20-year-old again. It’s a great experience to take part in the best league in the world.

“I have a lot of ambition, and have not come here to take a secondary role. I want to be part of the team and am confident I will do it. The knee feels really good and I feel I am fit and ready to play at Newcastle, but it is the decision of the manager.”

He added: “I am very happy in Manchester – I obviously had a very difficult start as I picked up an injury, not the best beginning to life at a new club. But I have worked really hard to be back with my team-mates. I have a lot of experience and I know injuries are part of the game.”
