Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has fired a warning to the club’s title rivals and says the capture of Mesut Ozil proves the Gunners mean business.

Arsenal have not won a trophy in eight years but Walcott believes that could all change following the arrival of Ozil from Real Madrid on deadline day.

The Gunners smashed their transfer record to pieces after paying Real a reported £43million for the German international and Walcott believes the signing is a huge statement of intent.

It was all doom and gloom at the Emirates Stadium after Aston Villa left with all three points on the opening day of the season but there has been a big turnaround since then.

The Gunners eased into the group stages of the Champions League before beating Tottenham 1-0 at the weekend and the signing of Ozil has put the icing on the cake as far as Walcott is concerned.

“It definitely shows a statement that we are ready to step up,” said Walcott.

“We had a disappointing start to the season, but we have bounced back (with the win over Tottenham) and it is looking fantastic now.

“With the likes of Ozil joining the club, it is only going to boost everyone.”

Ozil is now set to line up in a Gunners midfield that will also include Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla, meaning all of a sudden Arsenal fans are optimistic for the campaign ahead.
