Former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has hailed the influence of Paul Pogba in the France team and compared him to former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira.

The Juventus midfielder has been an ever-present member of Les Bleus’ side since the start of the World Cup in Brazil.

The former Manchester United youngster has been able to progress since finding regular first-team football in Serie A and he managed to score for Didier Deschamps’ side against Nigeria in the 2-0 win in the last 16.

Pogba, 21, has been compared to former France captain Vieira due to his influence and style of play and Cabaye has been quick to pay tribute to his team-mate.

“Yes, fortunately for us, Paul is like Vieira,” said Cabaye. “He is very important for the team dynamic and we just enjoy playing together with him. That unity is the best way for us to progress as far as we can.

“Paul deserved to be man of the match against Nigeria and to score because he is a very good footballer.

“He keeps his confidence even though he has been getting a lot of criticism. He stays relaxed and he knows the team is with him.
“He showed what he can do on the pitch and it is the best way to give a response to those who criticise him.”

France are currently 8.50 to win the World Cup with Dafabet, but they face a difficult quarter-final clash against Germany on Friday.

The 1998 World Cup winners are 2.92 to beat Joachim Low’s side, the draw is priced at 3.22, while Germany are the slight favourites at 2.40.
