Luka Modric says Croatia cannot afford to get carried away after downing Argentina 3-0 in World Cup Group D.

Ante Rebic hit the opener after pouncing on a horrendous mistake from Argentina stopper Willy Caballero, Modric then scored from range to give Croatia a commanding lead before Ivan Rakitic made sure of the result late on.

The Europeans have secured a spot in the knockout stages with a game to spare thanks to their impressive victory on Thursday after beating Nigeria 2-0 in their opener.

Croatia are now 15.00 to win the World Cup outright and Modric says the squad are in confident mood, but he stressed they will not allow complacency to creep in after opening the tournament with back-to-back victories.

“The most important objective has been realised. We’ve got to take it game by game, let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” said the Real Madrid playmaker.

“This win will boost our confidence for the coming games.

“It’s going to be tough, but let’s avoid euphoria, give it a wide berth and keep our feet firmly on the ground to prepare for the next matches.”

Croatia finish the group stages with a meeting with Iceland on Tuesday. Croatia are 2.50 to come out on top, Iceland can be backed at 3.30 and a draw is 2.70.

Modric’s side will take on either France, Denmark or Australia in the first knockout round and they will be keen to qualify as group winners, as that would probably see them avoid Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus.
