Croatia captain Luka Modric feels his side’s 2-0 win over Nigeria in the World Cup can give his team ‘wings’ ahead of their game against Argentina.

Modric and co stormed to the top of Group D on Saturday night after they proved too much for Nigeria in Kaliningrad.

An own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo gave them momentum before Modric scored a penalty in the second half to wrap up the win.

Croatia now have a two-point cushion at the top of the group after Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw but Modric is now confident going into their next game.

They will play Argentina on Thursday June 21 in Nizhny Novgorod and Modric says the mood in the camp is good. “It’s an important win which will boost our confidence for the forthcoming matches.

This will lift us to continue our journey,” said Real Madrid midfielder Modric.

“I believe that on the wings of this win we will up our game and continue our journey in the way that we planned before coming here.

“Argentina is going to be a very difficult match against maybe the favourites in the group.

“But this win will boost our confidence and as we go along, we will raise our game – but to get three points against them will be tough.”

Argentina, who are 11.00 to win the competition, remain the favourites for Thursday’s clash and they are 2.05 to grab the three points. The draw is 3.40, while Croatia can be backed at odds of 3.80.
