Agnieszka Radwanska booked her place in quarter-finals of Bank of The West Classic following a 6-4 6-3 victory over Francesca Schiavone.
Despite winning in straight sets, it was a difficult game for the top seed Radwanska, who is still getting used to playing back on hard courts.
Former French Open winner Schiavone made life difficult for the 24-year-old, who was not able to rely on her serve against the talented Italian.
However it was Radwanska who came out on top in the end though and she paid tribute to her opponent for putting up a good fight.
She told the WTA official website: “It was my first match back on hard courts and the conditions were tough too, with the balls really flying here. And the serve was not the key in this match at all – we were both struggling with that.
“It’s also tough to play against somebody who plays such different tennis than the other girls – a lot of spin, one-handed backhand, slice – it’s uncomfortable tennis to play against.
“It’s always fun to play against Francesca, though the first few times I played her I really struggled to get used to it.”
Uzbekistan-born Varvara Lepchenko is lying in wait for Radwanska in the last eight after she was able to beat Tamira Paszek 6-4 6-4 to set up the encounter with the tournament?s top seed.
