Agnieszka Radwanska has advanced to the second round of the China Open after overcoming Stefanie Voegele in a tough encounter on Saturday evening.

The Pole, the current world number four, lost the opening set to the 56th-ranked Swiss, but battled through with a 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory.

The biggest upset of the day so far has seen the Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova beat Samantha Stosur, the former US Open champion, for the second time in the space of a week. The margin of victory was 7-5 6-3.

The Czech beat the Australian, who was seeded fifteenth for this tournament, at the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last week and continued this form in Beijing to secure her eighth win in her last 10 matches against the Aussie.

Meanwhile, Li Na delighted the home crowd by crushing Daniela Hantuchova 6-0 6-4, US teenager Madison Keys sailed past Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia 6-4 6-3 and Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi beat Germany’s Julia Goerges 7-5 6-4.

More matches are scheduled for Sunday, with Klara Zakopalova taking on British number one Laura Robson and World Number One Serena Williams facing Russia’s Elena Vesnina in what will be her first match since securing the US Open title earlier this month.
