Double Olympic champion Andy Murray has booked his place in the quarter-finals of the US Open after comfortably seeing off Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

The Brit is hoping to continue his fantastic run of form after already claiming the Wimbledon crown and Olympic gold in 2016.

Murray, who is priced at 2.30 to win the US Open, was far too strong for the 22nd seed as he dropped just five games to progress 6-1 6-2 6-2 in New York and secure a meeting with Kei Nishikori.

The Scot was keen to show signs of improvement against the Bulgarian after looking off the pace against Paolo Lorenzi in the previous round and his swift victory sent a message out to his rivals.

The three-time Grand Slam champion lost in his only other meeting with Dimitrov this year when they clashed in Miami, but he firmly put that memory to the back of his mind in the Big Apple.

The 29-year-old was delighted with his performance and felt that he was always in a strong position to close out the match after establishing a commanding lead in the early stages.

Murray said: “I played extremely well. Tactically I played a good match, made very few unforced errors and made it tough for Grigor.

“Once I got up in the score and wasn’t giving him any free points, I could sense it was getting tough for him. “I just wanted to keep my foot on the gas.”

Juan Martin del Potro and Stan Wawrinka will meet in the other quarter-final in Murray’s half of the draw and so one of them will provide the next test for the Scot if he can overcome Nishikori.
